Maine Striper Fishing starts to heat up this month as fish gorge themselves in preparation for the fall migration. We still have good numbers of Bluefish around and they have been tearing up livebaits, artificials & flies.

Bluefin Tuna fishing in the Gulf of Maine is at it's peak this month and should provide for some epic battles...weather permitting!!!

We still have a few dates open this month. Call today for more info on availability.

Maine Striper & Bluefish report 9/02/08

Time for wire leaders...Francisco, of Swarovski Optics Italy & Mario...visiting midcoast Maine from northern Italy had their hands full today as the battled with schoolie Bluefish on the fly!!! What a blast!!!

BLUEFISH, BLUEFISH, BLUEFISH!!!! The Blues are in!!! We've had continued success fishing for Stripers using our proven light-tackle livebait fishing techniques. Bluefin Tuna should provide saltwater anglers quite a thrill this month as they continue to terrorize the nearshore ledges...hopefully we will see a run of the 60-100 class fish that have been prevalant during the past few years.

I only have a few remaining dates left. Call today to set up a time.

Maine Striper & Tuna fishing report 8/18/08

The Baker Family & Capt. George with a nice shallow water light tackle Bluefish!!!

Gary Eaton of IDEXX Labs with his personal Best 40+ inch Striped Bass caught & released 8/18/08

Tuna fishing has really picked up over the last week...We've been seeing good suface feeding action giving us some great chances to hook-up with light tackle...We had a fish that measured nearly 60 inches on the boat today...caught less than 3 miles offshore. This fished smashed a Heru Skipjack popper and bent the Lamiglas LGM-80 rod to the point where the cork rings were groaning!!! After what seemed like an hour long battle...we sunk two gaffs into the fish and heisted it aboard. What a fish!!!

Striper fishing has had its ups & downs....Today was one of our season highlights, at least for big fish. Some Big fish are showing up in the rivers & livebait & chunks have been doing the trick. Early mornings up on the flats can produce some beautiful sight casting chances...These fish are big and spook easily but with the right presentatation they can be fooled into taking the fly.

Cod have been consistent on the nearshore ledges & our kids trips continue to be very popular.

Maine saltwater fishing report8/09/08

Super Fly veterans Todd Mackenzie & Bill Coppola with a couple of beauties caught during the course of this past week

Wow... Striper Fishing, Tuna fishing, Cod fishing...you name it we covered it over the past week.

Striper fishing has been successful using our proven live baiting techniques...we've caught some nice fish drifting the ledges using live bait...heavy rain & a line low pressure systems has hampered the striper fishing somewhat but that's normal... mother nature at work.

Cod fishing on the ledges continues to produce...butterfly jigging slays fish...so does the old standby diamond jig with teaser combo!!!

We'll be on the ledges for most of the coming week fishing for Tuna...Stay tuned for reports....We are entering the most exciting time of year to tackle "Football" Bluefins.
Tomorrow we're gonna try our hand at catch & release Sharkin'....the Gulf of Maine has many species of Shark including the Mighty Mako shark...Blue sharks & Thresher are also fairly common. We may even try to hook one up on the fly rod.

Maine Saltwater Fishing report 8/3/08

Karen M. caught this nice slot sized Striper today(8/03/08) one of over forty fish caught this afternoon!!!
Niem Ngyuen & Ken Clendenin with a double header of codfish....Ken Clendenin with his own version of a double!!!

Offshore/Nearshore: We are now entering the hottest part of the year to catch Bluefin Tuna off midcoast region of Maine. In the next two months Bluefin will prowl the ledges to feed on the prolific baitfish schools. We are set-up to tackle these Tuna with Fly & Spin gear as well as the standard stand-up trolling gear. Now is the time to get out there!!!

Codfishing has been nothing short of epic...while we have not landed any "whale cod"
we have put big numbers of fish in the boat. Double & triple hook-ups have been the norm. As bonus to these trips we normally get close-ups of rolling whales...ocean sunfish are a fairly common sighting too...and the icing on the cake...."Football" Tuna...We always have tuna gear on board for the common Tuna Blow-ups that we witness while on the ledge!!!

Inshore: The Striper/Bluefishing fishing has begun to heat up. Fishing over ledges that have powerful tidal flows running over them has produced some nice catches...The stripers were slow in coming this year but finally we are catching some nice fish!!! Livebaiting/chunking has been working the best...especially with big fish!!!
This afternoon we fished the ebb tide and did extremely well...fishing with me were Bill, Todd, Art & Karen...we landed 44 striped bass in about 4 hours time all caught while fishing with live Blueback Herring...drifting over ledges & rocky bottom structure in 30-70 feet of water.
As has been the case this entire season...the "family/kids" fishing trips have been wildy popular.

Maine Saltwater Fishing report 7/28/08

Guy Jasmin of Bowdoin Billiards & his son with a nice double hookup caught 7/27/08

This week we have caught some nice stripers using livebaiting techniques...drifting baits deep over ledges has been productive...

the Codfishing has been good offshore with numerous keeper fish being caught.

Our Kids fishing trips have been outstanding...The kids have been going out of their minds over this trip...many youngsters have convinced their parents to book the next trip with me before we return to the dock.

We have also teamed up with other top midcoast guide service's to offer "learn to flyfish on saltwater" trips....these trips offer a well instructed mini course on the grass before we take the lesson to the water...where you can actually catch fish on your first time out!!!

Maine fishing report 7/23/08

Nicholas Naylor-Leyland with an Ocean Pout that slammed a pink Smith Nagamasa jig in 90 feet of water. Wiliamson "Benthos" & "Abyss" deep Jigs have been slaying fish too

(left)Young Forrest Langhorne struggles to heft his Striper, Over the last few years I have had the pleasure of guiding three Generations of the Langhorne clan.

(right)Nicholas Naylor-Leyland with one of many Keeper codfish caught over the past week using deadly "Butterfly" jigging techniques

This past week we have run the entire gamut of Maine saltwater sportfishing charters. From inshore Stripers to chasing big pelagic fish & groundfish offshore...We've done it all!!!

Starting with the Striper bite...we have had excellent results drifting with live bait, Mackeral/Herring, landing numerous fish over 30 inches. I have found that by targeting fish over deep water ledges, we can catch fish all day long, not huge numbers but steady fishing on bigger fish!!!...low light conditions have not been as important as they would be when fishing skinny water...tidal flow is everything. Fly fishing has produced some nice fish...remember to have lots of patience when targeting these fish in "thin water" you wont get lots of chances to fool that big striper into eating your fly....make every cast count!!!

The "nearshore" Bluefin Tuna fishing has slowed over the past few days....we have seen the water temperature drop several degrees from temps in the 64-66 degree range to 58-60 degree range. Several giants have been landed locally....With the massive amounts of baitfish that have been holding off the ledges...I expect the influx of "Football" Bluefin tuna to arrive any day now.

Groundfishing for Cod has been excellent...we have done numerous trips over the past week...all of them very succesful. Butterfly jigging technique have accounted for almost all of our fish. I recently guided Doug S. & his good friend Mike, Capt. of the Bermuda based "Mojo", a 35'Cabo tournament billfish boat. Capt. Mike was consistently raising codfish 20+ feet off the bottom before they slammed the jig using the high speed "Butterfly" jigging technique

The family/kids trip remains very popular. This trip is a great way for a family to spend quality time on the water and is perfect for introducing youngster's to the saltwater sportfishing world.

Maine Striper, Tuna, Cod fishing report 7/18/08

Tory Lentine with his first Codfish caught while "butterfly" jigging(*note the well worn Smith Nagamasa jig hanging from the lip of his cod...this lure has been a slayer)

Oliver Lowe with his personal best Striper

The Striper fishing has been pretty good for this past week...fishing with live Mackeral/Herring has produced good numbers of keeper sized fish. Fly fishing has been a little bit tougher but early morning starts and also evenings have produced.

On the Tuna front...Large Tuna continue to terrorize the nearshore ledges with several fish over 400 pounds being landed locally...we have seen fish that have been in the 150-200 pound class. Early morning's have the tuna blitzed up on massive baitballs.

*CCA Speaks out on the plight of Bluefin Tuna

HOUSTON, TX- The Coastal Conservation Association Board of Directors is calling for Atlantic harvest levels of bluefin tuna to be reduced to levels supported by science and is urging the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) to require all member nations to adopt such quotas by emergency action. If ICCAT refuses to do so, CCA believes that the only alternative is a complete closure of the Atlantic bluefin tuna fishery and an international curtailment of trade. The call to action was outlined in a letter from CCA National Chairman Walter W. Fondren III to Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez and Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne. "Many marine scientists believe bluefin are on the verge of a stock collapse, and there are indications here in the US that the stock has already crashed," said Robert G. Hayes, CCA general counsel. "Sometimes all you are left with is the truth, and the painful truth now is that nothing less than emergency action can reverse the years of overfishing that resulted from exceeding quotas that in themselves were set too high." Tuna range throughout the Atlantic from the Mediterranean Sea to the Gulf of Mexico. As one of the most valuable fish in the sea, bluefin tuna are targeted throughout their range by the fishing fleets of many nations while fishery managers on either side of the Atlantic have been unable or unwilling to agree on an effective recovery plan. Catches from the eastern stock of bluefin, spawned in the Mediterranean, have exceeded scientific advice by almost 400 percent for at least the last five years. Rebuilding plans for the western stock, spawned in the Gulf of Mexico, have also been a complete failure, with the U.S. unable to catch its quota for the past three years. "The focus has been on the business side of this fishery for far too long and greed has been the driving force in its management," said Charles Witek, vice chairman of CCA's National Government Relations Committee. "CCA has long known that focusing on anything other than the health of the resource is the first step to ensuring its demise. Bluefin are another tragic example of what happens when you put business and fishermen first." The moratorium would have to be adopted by the member nations of ICCAT, a United Nations chartered fishery organization responsible for the conservation of such recreationally and commercially important species as tuna, swordfish and marlin in the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent seas. The organization was established by treaty in 1969 and is the only organization that can undertake the range of work required for the study and management of tunas and other key migratory species in the Atlantic. "As is so often the case, the American fisherman is not responsible for driving bluefin tuna to the brink of collapse, but they are going to have to be a part of the solution to salvage what is left," said Dr. Russell Nelson, CCA's Gulf fisheries consultant.

Cod fishing on the nearshore ledges has been truly outstanding...we've done several trips this week...double & triple hook-ups are commonplace, we've landed several fish over 30 inches...All caught while using butterfly jigging techniques. Pollack, wolfish, and other groundfish have all come over the rail during these trips.

This morning we were fortunate enough to witness a massive 400-500# ocean sunfish (mola mola)basking itself on the surface as whales rolled all around us.

Our kids trip remains very popular...

Maine Striper Fishing report 7/13/08

John & Bill Coppola with a nice pair of Maine Striped Bass caught 7/13/08

Wow...the Tuna are starting to light up...The striper fishing is starting to light back up....It's fun to be a fishing guide again. After pulling the plug on a tuna trip early this morning due to high winds, we decided to do a little striper fishing before bagging it for the morning...around mid morning we decided to go back out on the river despite the rough/windy conditions...we had a livewell full of bait(herring/mackeral). On the first spot we drop our baits to the ledge below...BAM!!! Double Hook-up on a pair of slot sized fish. Next drop went a little deeper...BAM...BAM...another double...two rods are bent to the grip with nice fish...the heavy current aiding these fish....After a good battle the first fish comes to my hand while the the second fish is still screaming line out. After a quick photo the first fish is released, a 33" Striper. Soon after the second bass rolls up to the boat it's broad tail slapping water as it tries to dive one last time...I'm not having any of that as I thrust my hand into its bucket mouth and lift this fish from the water for another photo. this one tapes out at around 38"...what a beauty...we managed several more nice fish before we were finished. we're starting catch a few nice fish...Stay tuned for more reports.

Maine Striper fishing report 7/10/08

A very happy 9 year old Omar Dahrouch "Mackeral Mayhem" 07/06/08 ~ Tim Raines with his first ever Striped Bass, a healthy "slot sized" Keeper caught 07/08/08

We've been finding some nice Stripers early in the morning and late evenings around sundown...By taking our time and really working an area we've caught some nice fish over 30 inches. Typical run & gun style fishing has not been overly effective...finding schools of fish and working them has been key. The stripers on the flats seem to be feeding heavily on shrimp & crabs...keep that in mind while out fishing...we're not seeing the big blitzes when the Bass are feeding on Herring...finesse fishing is the name of the game.

Bluefin Tuna fishing is starting to pick up locally, especially on the bigger fish. The little 50-100 pound fish should be making their annual appearance any day now. Reports show that several Giant Tuna have been taken by the commercial fleet.

Ravenous alligator sized Bluefish are set to invade the mid-coast region...I've already had several of the "yellow eyed demons" in the boat...it's time to break out the wire leaders!!!

We've also done a few more of the Kids "Mackeral Mayhem" trips...I just cannot believe how much fun we have had on these trips!!!I have received several call from parents telling me that the kids are still bragging about all the fish they caught!!!

Call us today to set up a reservation.

Maine Striper fishing report 7/3/08

Client Mike Walsh with a respectable 5# slot fish caught on topwater 7/2/08

We're definetly seeing some improvements in the Muscongus Bay area Striper fishery.
The fishing has been best near the bottom of the tides fishing along the edges of the mud flats in 1.5-3.5 feet of water. I've been spending a considerable amount of time in these area's...most of it spent poling the skinny after waking fish. We're not seeing huge numbers of fish, but we are seeing some nice slot size fish, some bigger than slot too!!! From what I have been finding the fish have been feeding on tiny grass shrimp, despite the large amount of herring available to them. Crab & shrimp type flies will work...weirdly enough...topwater baits have been producing violent strikes. It's time to bust out my secret shrimp gurgler fly that I originally designed for night time Snookin' in South Florida.
On the spin...rebel jumpin' minnows, zara spooks & chug bugs have been working well.

Maine Striped Bass fishing report

A happy Detective Robert Smith from Texas with his first ever Striped Bass, caught 6/22/08 using a black sluggo on ultra light tackle("Evening Blitz Trip")A "fish story" that is sure to grow by the time he gets home to Texas!!!

Early Morning's & late evening trips have been critical in producing fish for us. As we continue to experience some slower than normal fishing, I have switched gears and instead of stubbornly tossing flies & artificials, have begun using live herring & chunking techniques more commonly used during the heat of mid season. The switch has paid off. While we havn't landed any really big stripers this season, we are still catching. Of course we continue to cast our flies and artificials & pick off fish here & there. The good news is that Big schools of striped Bass have invaded southern Maine...It's just a matter of timing of when they'll come blitzing into Muscongus Bay.
I have made a couple "football" Tuna scouting trips around Monhegan Island...Heavy Fog has hampered my search. The next clear day I plan to spend some time offshore scouting for the early arrival of BFT's

In addition to my Striper/Bluefish/Tuna trips I'll be offering light tackle Cod/Groundfish trips to the ledges off Penobscot & Muscungus Bay which have been covered with codfish and other tasty species. Ask for details!!!

Reservations continue to come in for the 2008 season, call today to set up a time.

Maine Striper fishing report

We've had a run of slow fishing over the last few days...most likely due to the unsettled weather patterns that have been moving through the region. Baitfish of many varieties continue to clog our rivers & bays. Thick schools of Juvie herring have arrived giving the Stripers plenty to forage on. Mackeral have made an early appearance and have been blitzing on schools of micro herring....If only these macks grew to the size of their southern cousins, They're still kinda fun with a 5 wt!!!
Reports from other parts of the State indicate that Maine is off to a slow start...which is consistent with what I have been finding.

Also I've been receiving reports of "Football" Tuna crashing on the surface around the south side of Monhegan Island...I'll try to make my first scouting run of the season this friday if I can get some time off from my Striper Charters.

Reservations continue to come in for the 2008 season...I have limited availability left for July & August. call today to set up a time. I still have plenty of evening blitz trips available!!!

Maine Striper fishing report

All that I can say is...WOW!!! I have never seen that baitfish come in as thick as they are right now. The water is completely black with balls of baitfish of many different varieties. Dense schools of rainbait have moved in over the course of the last week, Mackeral have made an early appearance and are blowing up on bait schools every where(kind of fun on a 5 or 6 weight)Alewives are still dropping out of the rivers in Jaw dropping numbers, add some Juvie herring & a worm "hatch" that should go off around the full moon period(right now!!!)and we have the stage set for some epic fishing conditions. Striped Bass have not shown up in force yet but we have fished pretty amazing surface blitzes. Fishing the right tidal flows and during low light hours has been best. I have been on the water every day this month, day & night, and have seen the ups & downs that guides all along the Maine coast have been experiencing. On "my" stretch of the "Striper Coast" the Bass haven't really settled into thier typical summer patterns so time on the water has been critical. Early mornings and late evening trips have produced best.

Maine Striped Bass fishing report

Stripers continue to show up in the shallow coves & tidal rivers of Muscongus Bay on a daily basis. The big push of migrating fish is still being slowed down by the colder ocean temps.
Over the past few days we've been finding stripers in most of the usual places as well as some new spots that I typically don't fish early in the season. Huge schools of baitfish continue to supply our Stripers with abundant forage. Bigger fish should start to show up this week.
Flies like the the Half & Half have been our bread and butter and soft plastics like the 5-7 inch slug-go & fin-s fish have been slayers.
We've also been using live bait to put some of the bigger fish in the boat. A live alewive fished under a float has been tough to beat.

Or reservations continue to come in, call us today to set up a time before prime dates fill....dont forget to ask about our nearshore "Football" Bluefin Tuna trips.

Maine Striper Fishing Report 6/3/08

Baitfish continue to pour into the bays & tidal rivers of coastal Maine. Cool ocean temps have kept the Striper migration to a trickle, but that is about to change. Every day we have seen signs that the run is about to bust wide open. Yesterday afternoon during the ebb tide we witnessed our first blitz of fish of the 2008 season. Hungry Striped Bass were blowing up on schools of river herring making for a very exciting couple of hours of fishing, add to that 65 degree water & a new moon triggering an evening worm hatch and you've got a pretty good fishing scenario. While the fishing is not what it will be in a week or so...it's a great start. I have been in full on fish mode for a few weeks now & have been spending all my time either rigging gear, tying flies or working on the boat. We'll have some new Airflo fly lines to play around with this season & all kinds of new rods, reels & other fun stuff.

Maine Striped Bass Fishing : Guided Trip Report

The Striper Fishing season is now officially under way for Super Fly Charters. With my first two guided Striped Bass fishing trips of the 2008 season in the history books, I'm really looking forward to the busy season ahead & arrival of the hordes of migrating stripers that will soon be invading the coast of Maine.

Over the last few days the two guided trips that we have done have gone extremely well...considering that we are not yet into June. We left the dock in search of warmer water and the larger schools of Baitfish (alewives). It didn't take long, after running a couple of miles upriver we ran into pockets of 59-61 degree water, In a scene resembling something out of "Wild Kingdom"...with baitfish skipping all over the surface and the Eagles, Osprey and hundreds of cormorants feeding heavily in the fast river currents, we began probing around some of the large boulders & ledges that provided excellent ambush points for the Striped Bass. Casting large alewive patterns on sink tip lines it didn't take long before we were into a healthy 25 incher of around six pounds. As we worked our way upstream we picked off fish here and there, using flies and soft plastics on spinning gear, the fish ranging in size from 16-25 inches with a total of 15 fish during our four hour trip. Much better than I had hoped for.

Before our trip, I had explained to my clients that it was still early in the Striper fishing season and I wasn't too sure how things would go, They mentioned that it didn't really matter to them... they were in town for a weekend wedding party and were just looking to do some fishing....any fishing!!!Catching a few would just be the icing on the cake. I guess it worked out okay as we caught over 25 stripers in two mornings of fishing. Not too bad early season action!!!

Reservations continue to come in for the 2008 season. Call today to set up a time before prime dates fill.

Maine Striper Fishing almost here!!!

40+ incher caught & released during 2007 Herring run
Beautiful Herring pattern shared by: Jim Miller

The herring run's have just started in Maine and thousands upon thousands of Striped Bass will soon be entering the tidal rivers & bays to feed on the huge schools of herring. The first Stripers will be "schoolie" sized fish 18-26 inches with larger fish coming shortly after.
So...today I am tying some Alewive & Blueback herring flies to "match the hatch". I use many of the new synthetic fibers and flash material when tying these flies, DNA fusion & Slinky fibers work well. I use long, thin stemmed saddle hackles too. Using synthetics & "Hollow Fly" techniques, perfected by noted NJ angler and master fly tier Bob Popovics, I'm able to quickly build a bulky yet sparse herring profile. some lead wire wrapped around the hook shank will help the flie get down in heavy current. I like the Tiemco 600sp or similar hook, they're razor sharp right out of the package & super strong, they wont straighten under the weight of a big fish.
For colors, I tie with a white or gray belly, some light pink, light blue & lavender along the sides topped with olive. finished off with a prominent holographic eye.

9-10 wt rods with 300-450 grain lines will pull these flies down deep to where "biggie" Stripers are usually holding station. We focus on the Herring runs of Muscongus Bay & the many tidal rivers that flow directly into it. The Saint George, Medomak & Damariscotta river all harbor huge runs of "river herring" Come join us this season!!!

Reservations continue to come in for the 2008 Maine Striper fishing season!!!

"Super Fly" almost ready for Maine Striper fishing season

Posted: 5/4/2008

Well...I spent the day working on the "Super Fly", the hull has been cleaned & waxed...twice!!! The brand new blingin' color Raymarine electronics installed. Just a few more loose ends to tie up and she's ready to splash!!!

For those of you who don't know, the " Super Fly" is our Beaufort, NC built 21' Parker CC Special Edition. Parker has building boats for well over 30 years, built & designed to run the treacherous waters of North Carolina's Outer Banks. Parker has built a legendary & well deserved reputation among top east coast guides.
After running several smaller, able, yet less capable, flats skiffs, off the coast of Maine & Florida, we think we've found the ultimate fly & light tackle fishing skiff for fishing the rugged New Enland coast.
With it's 10 inch draft the "Super Fly" can easily fish the skinny water of the flats. With it's elevated casting platform on front deck, our anglers can easily sight & cast to their quarry...on the platform the anglers eye's are almost on the same level as your guides, no more worrying about casting to the numbers of a clock, you'll see your target.

Safety, client comfort & fishability were all qualities that drew me to Parker boats. The wide beam and Carolina flared bow will keep you dry & comfortable when that afternoon seabreeze kicks up a tide chop.

Our boat is as capable chasing " Football" Bluefin Tuna off the Maine coast as it is on the flats. With its mid thigh gunnels you'll be able to brace yourself as we race to intercept a school of "Blitzing" fish to get you in posistion to make that long cast to the boiling tuna.
For the livebait enthusiast, We have rigged the "Super Fly" with two massive forty gallon livewells each fed by dual high capacity raw water pumps. We can carry all the live bait necessary for a full day on the water. Those Maine stripers wont stand a chance when we drift down over that ledge with some live "swimmers" in the water. Also ask about our "Bait & Switch" techniques for Fly & Light Tackle anglers...you wont believe how well it works!!!
