As the August heat descends on the East Cape, fishermen descend on the Sea of Cortez in search of big game. August is considered by many as the best month for large fish such as 500-800lb. blue marlin, 200-300lb. tuna and 50-60lb. dorado. This August did not disappoint. So far this month we have seen a 560lb. blue marlin, a 246lb. yellowfin tuna, and a 62lb. dorado. Many will say that August is too hot to be in the East Cape, and I don’t blame them. But if you can handle temps. in the upper 90’s, you just can’t beat the fishing in August.
This week we saw some incredible fishing once again. Most boats right now are landing plenty of tuna, stripe marlin, sailfish, dorado, and roosters. The tuna bite has been relatively close to the hotels, as has most of the good fishing this week. There has been lots of roosterfish action just off shore of hotel Punta Colorada with some nice 50-60 pounders boated this week. Mike Rieser of Baja Fly Fishing Co. reported that the surf fishing around Punta Colorada continues to be tough, with a few jacks and roosters being landed, but not in any great numbers.
If you like fishing for a big variety of species, I mean something like catching 15 different species in one day, then you need to be in the East Cape right now. Everything from Wahoo to Billfish to Jacks are in right now. So pack a bag and Escape to the Cape….East Cape, B.C.S., Mexico. Great specials available for August and September.
Until next week!
